About

Brivaracetam is an advanced antiepileptic drug specifically indicated for the treatment of partial-onset seizures, with or without secondary generalization, in adults and adolescents aged 16 years and older. Its mechanism of action involves high-affinity binding to synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A) in the brain, a key protein involved in neurotransmitter release. By modulating SV2A, brivaracetam is believed to reduce hyperexcitability of neurons, thereby stabilizing electrical activity and preventing the uncontrolled firing that leads to seizures. The sustained-release (SR) formulation is designed to provide a consistent therapeutic concentration over an extended period, which allows for convenient once-daily dosing and may enhance patient adherence. This targeted action helps to significantly reduce the frequency and severity of seizures, improving the quality of life for individuals living with epilepsy. It is often prescribed as an adjunctive therapy when other treatments are insufficient.
