About

Rosuvastatin is a highly effective HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, commonly known as a statin, prescribed for the management of elevated cholesterol levels and the prevention of cardiovascular disease. It functions by competitively inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which is a rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis within the liver. This inhibition leads to a substantial reduction in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), often referred to as "bad" cholesterol, as well as total cholesterol and triglycerides. Concurrently, rosuvastatin can modestly increase high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), or "good" cholesterol.

Through its comprehensive lipid-modifying effects, rosuvastatin significantly reduces the risk of major cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction, stroke, and the need for arterial revascularization. Its potent action and established safety profile position it as a cornerstone therapy in the primary and secondary prevention strategies for individuals with dyslipidemia and high cardiovascular risk.

Uses

  • Treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia.
  • Reduction of elevated LDL-C, total cholesterol, and triglycerides.
  • Prevention of major cardiovascular events in patients at high risk.
  • Treatment of homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia.
