About

Hydroxyurea is an antineoplastic agent primarily utilized in the management of various myeloproliferative disorders and sickle cell disease. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting ribonucleotide reductase, an enzyme crucial for DNA synthesis, thereby leading to cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, particularly in rapidly dividing cells. In conditions like chronic myeloid leukemia, essential thrombocythemia, and polycythemia vera, it helps to reduce excessive cell counts and alleviate associated symptoms. Furthermore, in sickle cell disease, hydroxyurea is known to increase the production of fetal hemoglobin (HbF), which dilutes the concentration of sickle hemoglobin, reducing red blood cell sickling and consequently decreasing the frequency of painful vaso-occlusive crises and acute chest syndrome. This dual utility makes it a valuable therapeutic option in both hematologic malignancies and benign hematologic conditions, improving patient quality of life and clinical outcomes.
