About

Cytofulvin 500 Tab contains Griseofulvin, an oral antifungal agent primarily used to treat dermatophyte infections of the skin, hair, and nails. Its mechanism of action involves interfering with fungal cell division by binding to tubulin, a protein essential for microtubule formation. This disrupts the mitotic spindle, preventing fungal cell replication. Griseofulvin is fungistatic rather than fungicidal. After oral administration, it is deposited in keratin precursor cells, making newly formed keratin resistant to fungal invasion.

This medication is effective against various species of Trichophyton, Microsporum, and Epidermophyton. It is particularly useful for infections that are extensive, difficult to treat topically, or involve the hair and nails (onychomycosis, tinea capitis). Due to its slow accumulation in keratin, treatment courses are often prolonged, ranging from weeks for skin infections to several months for nail infections, to ensure complete eradication of the fungus as the infected keratin grows out.
