About

Droxidopa is an orally administered synthetic amino acid precursor of norepinephrine, indicated for the treatment of symptomatic neurogenic orthostatic hypotension (nOH). In patients with nOH, there is a deficiency in norepinephrine production, leading to a significant drop in blood pressure upon standing, causing symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadedness, and syncope. Droxidopa is converted to norepinephrine by the enzyme dopa-decarboxylase, primarily in the peripheral nervous system.

This increases the levels of norepinephrine, which then acts on alpha-1 adrenergic receptors in the vasculature, leading to vasoconstriction and an elevation in blood pressure when standing. This mechanism helps to alleviate the debilitating symptoms associated with nOH, improving the patient's ability to perform daily activities and reducing the risk of falls.

Uses

  • Treatment of symptomatic neurogenic orthostatic hypotension (nOH).
  • Alleviates dizziness and lightheadedness upon standing.
  • Reduces the risk of syncope (fainting) associated with nOH.
  • Improves daily activity tolerance in nOH patients.
