About

Dutasteride 0.5mg is a dual 5-alpha reductase inhibitor primarily indicated for the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate. It functions by inhibiting both type 1 and type 2 isoforms of the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, which is responsible for converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a potent androgen that drives prostate growth. By effectively lowering DHT levels, dutasteride helps to shrink the prostate gland over time, leading to a sustained improvement in urinary flow and a reduction in BPH-related symptoms such as urinary hesitancy, weak stream, and frequent nighttime urination.

This reduction in prostate volume also contributes to a decreased risk of acute urinary retention and the need for surgical intervention for BPH.
