About

Dutasteride is a dual 5-alpha reductase inhibitor used for the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate. It works by inhibiting both type 1 and type 2 isoforms of 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a potent androgen that plays a crucial role in the growth and development of the prostate gland. By significantly reducing DHT levels, dutasteride effectively shrinks the prostate gland over time, leading to an improvement in urinary flow and a reduction in BPH symptoms such as hesitancy, weak stream, and nocturia.

It also helps to reduce the risk of acute urinary retention and the need for BPH-related surgery. Dutasteride can also be used off-label for male pattern baldness.
