About

EMPAPRO M 12.5/1000 TAB combines Empagliflozin 12.5mg, a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, and Metformin 1000mg, a biguanide, for the comprehensive management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Empagliflozin works by inhibiting SGLT2 in the kidneys, reducing glucose reabsorption and increasing glucose excretion in the urine, thereby lowering blood glucose levels independently of insulin. Metformin primarily reduces hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal glucose absorption, and improves insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues. This dual-action therapy targets multiple pathophysiological defects of type 2 diabetes, including impaired insulin secretion, increased hepatic glucose output, and insulin resistance. The combination is particularly effective for patients who have not achieved adequate glycemic control with monotherapy or who require a more robust approach to lower HbA1c levels, offering significant cardiovascular and renal protective benefits.

Uses

  • Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • To improve glycemic control in adults.
  • When diet and exercise are insufficient.
  • As an add-on to other antidiabetic agents.

  • Pregnancy - Not recommended during pregnancy. Consult a healthcare professional to weigh potential risks and benefits.
  • Breastfeeding - Avoid during breastfeeding as components may pass into breast milk. Seek medical advice.
  • Liver - Contraindicated in severe hepatic impairment due to increased risk of lactic acidosis. Use with caution in other liver conditions.
  • Kidney - Contraindicated in severe renal impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73m²) due to risk of lactic acidosis. Dose adjustment needed for moderate impairment.
  • Lung - Use with caution in severe acute or chronic lung disease due to potential for hypoxia, increasing lactic acidosis risk.
