About

Entecavir is a guanosine analogue nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) indicated for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in adults and pediatric patients aged 2 years and older with evidence of active viral replication and persistent elevations in serum aminotransferases (ALT and AST) or histologically active disease. It works by inhibiting all three functions of the HBV polymerase: base priming, reverse transcription of the negative strand from the pregenomic RNA template, and synthesis of the positive strand of HBV DNA.

This leads to a significant reduction in viral load, improvement in liver histology, and normalization of liver enzymes, thereby slowing disease progression and reducing the risk of complications like cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Entecavir is a potent antiviral agent that helps manage the long-term effects of chronic HBV infection.
