About

Febuxostat is a non-purine selective inhibitor of xanthine oxidase, indicated for the chronic management of hyperuricemia in adult patients with gout. Gout is a painful inflammatory arthritis caused by the deposition of uric acid crystals in the joints and tissues, which results from elevated levels of uric acid in the blood (hyperuricemia). Febuxostat works by potently and selectively blocking the enzyme xanthine oxidase, which is crucial for the metabolic pathway that produces uric acid. By inhibiting this enzyme, febuxostat effectively reduces the production of uric acid, thereby lowering serum uric acid concentrations to target levels. This action helps to prevent the formation of new urate crystals, dissolve existing ones over time, and consequently reduce the frequency and severity of gout flares, offering a valuable therapeutic option, especially for patients who cannot tolerate allopurinol.

Uses

  • Chronic management of hyperuricemia in gout patients.
  • Prevention of gout flares.
  • Reduction of serum uric acid levels.
  • Treatment for patients intolerant to allopurinol.

Directions For Use

Take orally once daily, with or without food. Do not stop taking during a gout flare unless advised by your doctor.

  • Effectively lowers serum uric acid levels.
  • Reduces frequency and severity of gout attacks.
  • Provides an alternative for allopurinol-intolerant patients.
  • Can be used in mild to moderate renal impairment without dose adjustment.
  • Convenient once-daily dosing.
  • Helps dissolve existing urate crystals over time.

  • Pregnancy - Not recommended during pregnancy due to insufficient safety data. Consult a doctor.
  • Breastfeeding - Not recommended during breastfeeding as it is unknown if it passes into breast milk. Consult a doctor.
  • Liver - Use with caution in patients with severe hepatic impairment; regular monitoring of liver function is recommended.
