About
Terbinafine, the active ingredient in FINTRIX 250MG TAB, is an antifungal medication belonging to the allylamine class, primarily indicated for the treatment of dermatophyte infections affecting the skin, hair, and nails. Its fungicidal mechanism involves the selective inhibition of squalene epoxidase, a crucial enzyme in the fungal ergosterol biosynthesis pathway. This inhibition leads to a significant accumulation of squalene within the fungal cell and a concomitant deficiency of ergosterol, both of which are highly toxic to the fungal cell membrane. The resulting disruption in membrane integrity and function ultimately leads to fungal cell death. Terbinafine demonstrates potent efficacy against dermatophytes such as Trichophyton, Microsporum, and Epidermophyton species, which are the common causative agents of conditions like ringworm, athlete's foot, and onychomycosis. Its fungicidal nature often allows for shorter and more effective treatment courses compared to fungistatic agents, particularly for stubborn nail infections.
