About
Fluvastatin is a synthetic lipid-lowering agent belonging to the class of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, commonly known as statins. It works by competitively inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme critical in the liver for cholesterol synthesis. This inhibition leads to a reduction in intracellular cholesterol, which in turn upregulates LDL receptors on hepatocyte surfaces, increasing the clearance of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol from the bloodstream. Fluvastatin is primarily used to reduce elevated total cholesterol, LDL-C, and triglycerides, and to increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia.
It also plays a role in preventing cardiovascular events in high-risk individuals by stabilizing atherosclerotic plaques and improving endothelial function. Fluvastatin is an effective adjunct to diet for reducing elevated apolipoprotein B (ApoB) and is considered a foundational therapy for managing dyslipidemia and reducing cardiovascular risk.
Uses
- Reduction of elevated total cholesterol and LDL-C in primary hypercholesterolemia.
- Treatment of mixed dyslipidemia to lower triglycerides and raise HDL-C.
- Prevention of cardiovascular events in patients with coronary heart disease.
- Adjunct to diet for reducing elevated apolipoprotein B (ApoB).

- Effectively lowers LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels.
- Reduces triglyceride levels.
- Increases HDL ("good") cholesterol levels.
- Decreases the risk of heart attack and stroke.
- Slows the progression of atherosclerosis.
- Improves overall cardiovascular health.

- Rash
- Elevated liver enzymes (transaminases)
- Increased creatine kinase (CK) levels
- Arthralgia (joint pain)

Safety Measures
- Alcohol - Excessive alcohol consumption can increase the risk of liver problems associated with statin use. Limit alcohol intake.
- Pregnancy - Fluvastatin is contraindicated during pregnancy due to the potential for fetal harm. Effective contraception should be used by women of childbearing potential.
- Breastfeeding - Fluvastatin is contraindicated during breastfeeding as it may be excreted in breast milk and could harm the infant.
- Liver - Contraindicated in active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of serum transaminases. Liver function tests should be monitored.
- Kidney - No dose adjustment is typically required for mild to moderate renal impairment. Use with caution in severe renal impairment.
- Lung - While rare, interstitial lung disease has been reported with statins. Monitor for symptoms like dyspnea, cough, and fever.
