About

Levetiracetam is an antiepileptic drug (AED) primarily used in the treatment of various seizure disorders. Its precise mechanism of action is not fully understood but is believed to involve binding to the synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A) in the brain, which modulates neurotransmitter release and helps to normalize neuronal excitability. Unlike many other AEDs, levetiracetam does not appear to act via GABAergic or glutamatergic pathways directly, nor does it significantly interact with sodium or calcium channels.

It is effective as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy for partial-onset seizures with or without secondary generalization, myoclonic seizures in patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, and primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsy. Levetiracetam is generally well-tolerated, with a favorable pharmacokinetic profile and minimal drug-drug interactions, making it a valuable option in epilepsy management.

  • Treatment of partial-onset seizures.
  • Management of myoclonic seizures.
  • Therapy for primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures.

  • Breastfeeding - Levetiracetam is excreted in human milk. Breastfeeding is generally not recommended unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks to the infant.
  • Liver - No dose adjustment is typically required for patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment. Use with caution in severe liver disease.
  • Kidney - Dose adjustment is necessary for patients with impaired renal function, as levetiracetam is primarily excreted by the kidneys.
