About
JARDIANCE (empagliflozin) is an oral medication belonging to the class of sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. It is primarily used to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Empagliflozin works by blocking the SGLT2 protein in the kidneys, which is responsible for reabsorbing glucose back into the bloodstream. By inhibiting this protein, Jardiance causes the kidneys to excrete more glucose in the urine, thereby lowering blood glucose levels. Beyond its glucose-lowering effects, Jardiance has demonstrated significant cardiovascular benefits, including a reduction in the risk of cardiovascular death, and renal benefits, slowing the progression of kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes.
