About

KERENDIA 20 MG TABLET contains Finerenone, a novel non-steroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist (MRA). It is specifically indicated for the treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Finerenone works by selectively blocking the overactivation of mineralocorticoid receptors, which are implicated in the pathogenesis of CKD and cardiovascular damage. By inhibiting these receptors, Finerenone reduces inflammation and fibrosis in the kidneys and heart, thereby mitigating kidney damage and cardiovascular risk.

Clinical studies have demonstrated that Finerenone significantly reduces the risk of sustained eGFR decline, end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, and non-fatal stroke in patients with CKD and T2D. This mechanism of action offers a distinct advantage over traditional MRAs by providing a more targeted approach with a potentially lower risk of hyperkalemia compared to steroidal MRAs. It represents a significant advancement in the management of cardiorenal complications in this high-risk patient population.

Uses

  • Treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) associated with type 2 diabetes.
  • Reduces the risk of CKD progression.
  • Lowers the risk of cardiovascular events.
  • Manages albuminuria in CKD patients with T2D.

Directions For Use

Take orally, once daily, with or without food, at approximately the same time each day.

Benefits

  • Slows the progression of chronic kidney disease.
  • Reduces the risk of kidney failure.
  • Lowers the risk of cardiovascular death.
  • Decreases the incidence of non-fatal myocardial infarction.
  • Reduces the occurrence of non-fatal stroke.
  • Improves albuminuria (protein in urine).

Side Effects

  • Hyperkalemia (high potassium levels)
  • Hypotension (low blood pressure)
  • Hyponatremia (low sodium levels)
  • Decreased glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Muscle spasms
  • Pruritus (itching)
  • Anemia
  • Urinary tract infection

Safety Measures

  • Alcohol - No specific interaction, but excessive alcohol consumption can worsen kidney and cardiovascular health.
  • Pregnancy - Not recommended during pregnancy due to potential fetal harm. Effective contraception should be used by women of childbearing potential.
  • Breastfeeding - Not recommended during breastfeeding as it is unknown if Finerenone is excreted in human milk.
  • Liver - Contraindicated in patients with severe hepatic impairment. Use with caution and consider dose adjustment in moderate hepatic impairment.
  • Kidney - Contraindicated in patients with severe kidney impairment (eGFR < 15 mL/min/1.73 m²). Monitor serum potassium and eGFR regularly.
  • Lung - No direct significant impact on lung conditions.
