About

Itraconazole is a synthetic triazole antifungal agent known for its broad-spectrum efficacy against a wide range of fungal pathogens, including dermatophytes, yeasts, and various systemic fungi. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of fungal cytochrome P450-dependent 14-alpha-demethylase, an enzyme critical for the synthesis of ergosterol, a key component of the fungal cell membrane. This disruption compromises the integrity and function of the fungal cell membrane, leading to fungal cell death.

The 100mg capsule formulation is frequently used for superficial fungal infections such as tinea corporis, tinea cruris, tinea pedis, and pityriasis versicolor, as well as for certain systemic mycoses. Itraconazole's lipophilic nature and affinity for keratin allow for sustained therapeutic concentrations in the skin and nails, making it effective for conditions requiring prolonged local action. Careful consideration of drug interactions and patient monitoring is essential due to its complex metabolism.
