About

Propranolol is a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor blocker, meaning it blocks both beta-1 receptors (primarily in the heart) and beta-2 receptors (found in various tissues, including the lungs and blood vessels). This dual action leads to a reduction in heart rate, myocardial contractility, and cardiac output, thereby effectively lowering blood pressure and reducing the heart's workload. It also inhibits the release of renin from the kidneys, further contributing to its antihypertensive effects. Beyond its cardiovascular applications, propranolol readily crosses the blood-brain barrier and can exert central nervous system effects, making it a valuable treatment for conditions such as generalized anxiety disorder, migraine prophylaxis, and essential tremor. It is a versatile medication used in the management of hypertension, angina pectoris, certain cardiac arrhythmias, and to prevent recurrent migraines. Due to its non-selective nature, it can cause bronchoconstriction and is contraindicated in patients with asthma.

  • Management of hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Prophylaxis of migraine headaches

  • Pregnancy - Propranolol is a Pregnancy Category C drug. Use only if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. May cause fetal growth restriction, bradycardia, or hypoglycemia.
  • Breastfeeding - Propranolol is excreted into breast milk. Generally considered safe, but monitor the infant for bradycardia, hypoglycemia, or respiratory distress.
  • Liver - Use with caution in patients with liver impairment. Propranolol is extensively metabolized by the liver; dose adjustment may be necessary.
  • Kidney - Use with caution in patients with kidney impairment. Excretion may be affected, leading to drug accumulation. Dose adjustment may be necessary.
  • Lung - Contraindicated in patients with bronchial asthma and severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) due to the risk of bronchospasm. Use with extreme caution in other lung conditions.
