About

Epoetin alfa/beta is a recombinant human erythropoietin, a glycoprotein hormone that plays a critical role in stimulating erythropoiesis, the production of red blood cells, in the bone marrow. This medication mimics the action of naturally occurring erythropoietin, which is primarily produced by the kidneys. It is clinically indicated for the treatment of anemia stemming from various causes, most notably chronic kidney disease, where impaired renal function leads to insufficient natural erythropoietin production. Additionally, it is used to manage chemotherapy-induced anemia in certain cancer patients and to reduce the need for allogeneic blood transfusions in specific surgical settings. By binding to erythropoietin receptors on erythroid progenitor cells, Epoetin alfa/beta promotes their proliferation, differentiation, and maturation into functional red blood cells, effectively increasing hemoglobin levels and alleviating the debilitating symptoms associated with anemia.
