About

RIFAXIGRSS 400 (Rifaximin) is a non-systemic antibiotic primarily used to treat bacterial infections of the gastrointestinal tract. Unlike most antibiotics, Rifaximin has very poor systemic absorption, meaning it stays largely within the gut lumen where it exerts its antibacterial effects. This localized action makes it highly effective against gut bacteria without significantly affecting the beneficial bacteria elsewhere in the body or causing widespread systemic side effects. It works by inhibiting bacterial RNA synthesis, thereby preventing bacterial growth and replication.

It is commonly prescribed for conditions such as traveler's diarrhea caused by non-invasive strains of E. coli, irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D), and hepatic encephalopathy. In hepatic encephalopathy, Rifaximin reduces the production and absorption of ammonia and other toxins by gut bacteria, which can improve neurological function in patients with liver disease. Its targeted action and minimal systemic exposure make it a unique and valuable option for managing specific gastrointestinal bacterial overgrowth and related conditions, offering relief from symptoms like diarrhea, bloating, and abdominal pain.
