About

Semi Reclimet is a combination medication specifically formulated for the comprehensive management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, integrating the actions of Gliclazide and Metformin. Gliclazide, a sulfonylurea, exerts its primary effect by stimulating the pancreatic beta cells to release more insulin, thereby directly contributing to the reduction of blood glucose levels. Metformin, a biguanide, operates through distinct mechanisms: it significantly reduces the liver's production of glucose, decreases the absorption of glucose from the intestines, and crucially, enhances the body's sensitivity to insulin, leading to improved peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. The synergistic combination of these two agents allows for a multi-faceted approach to glucose dysregulation in Type 2 diabetes, addressing both insulin secretion and insulin resistance. This results in more effective and robust glycemic control compared to monotherapy with either drug alone, helping patients achieve their target blood sugar levels and mitigate the risk of long-term complications.

Uses

  • Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
  • To improve glycemic control.
  • Used when diet, exercise, and monotherapy are insufficient.
  • To reduce fasting and post-meal blood sugar levels.

Directions For Use

Take this medication orally, usually with meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects. Follow your doctor's dosage instructions carefully.

Benefits

  • Provides comprehensive blood sugar control.
  • Combines two different mechanisms of action.
  • Reduces both fasting and post-prandial glucose.
  • May help in weight management (Metformin component).
  • Improves insulin sensitivity.
  • Helps prevent long-term diabetes complications.

Side Effects

  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Metallic taste
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Skin rash
  • Lactic acidosis (rare, serious with Metformin)
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency (with Metformin)
  • Weight gain (Gliclazide component)
  • Anorexia

Safety Measures

  • Alcohol - Alcohol can increase the risk of hypoglycemia and lactic acidosis (with Metformin). Avoid excessive alcohol consumption.
  • Pregnancy - Generally not recommended during pregnancy. Insulin is usually the preferred treatment for diabetes in pregnant women.
  • Breastfeeding - Not recommended during breastfeeding as both components may pass into breast milk and potentially affect the infant.
  • Liver - Use with caution in patients with liver impairment. Metformin is contraindicated in severe liver disease due to increased risk of lactic acidosis.
  • Kidney - Metformin is contraindicated in severe kidney impairment due to increased risk of lactic acidosis. Dose adjustment is necessary for moderate impairment.
  • Lung - No specific contraindications or precautions related to lung conditions are typically noted, but severe respiratory failure can increase lactic acidosis risk.
