About

Terbinafine is an allylamine antifungal agent primarily used to treat dermatophyte infections of the skin, hair, and nails. It works by inhibiting squalene epoxidase, an enzyme involved in fungal ergosterol synthesis. This leads to an accumulation of squalene within the fungal cell, which is toxic and disrupts cell membrane function, ultimately leading to fungal cell death.

Oral terbinafine is particularly effective for onychomycosis (fungal nail infections) due to its ability to concentrate in the nail bed and maintain therapeutic levels for an extended period after discontinuation. It is also used for severe tinea infections that are extensive or unresponsive to topical treatments, offering a systemic approach to eradicate persistent fungal pathogens.

Uses

  • Treatment of onychomycosis (fungal nail infections).
  • Management of tinea corporis (ringworm).
  • Therapy for tinea cruris (jock itch).
  • Treatment of tinea pedis (athlete's foot).
