About

Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) primarily utilized in the comprehensive management of essential hypertension, a condition characterized by persistently high blood pressure. Its mechanism of action involves selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor, which is found in various tissues, including the smooth muscle cells of blood vessels and the adrenal glands. By preventing angiotensin II from binding, telmisartan effectively inhibits its potent vasoconstrictive effects and its ability to stimulate aldosterone secretion, both of which contribute to elevated blood pressure. This leads to vasodilation and a reduction in fluid retention, ultimately lowering systemic blood pressure. Furthermore, telmisartan is also indicated for the reduction of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients aged 55 years or older who are at a high risk of cardiovascular events, particularly those who cannot tolerate ACE inhibitors. Its favorable pharmacokinetic profile, including a long duration of action, allows for convenient once-daily dosing, ensuring sustained blood pressure control throughout the entire 24-hour period.
