About

Valacyclovir 1000mg, often referred to as VALCIVIR 1000 TABS, is an antiviral drug that acts as a prodrug of acyclovir. It is rapidly and extensively converted to acyclovir in the body, which then inhibits viral DNA synthesis and replication. Acyclovir is active against herpes simplex virus types 1 (HSV-1) and 2 (HSV-2), varicella-zoster virus (VZV), and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Valacyclovir offers improved bioavailability compared to oral acyclovir, allowing for less frequent dosing and enhanced patient convenience, making it a preferred option for managing various herpes virus infections.

This medication is primarily used for the treatment of herpes zoster (shingles), treatment of initial and recurrent genital herpes, and suppression of recurrent genital herpes. It is also indicated for the treatment of cold sores (herpes labialis) and for the prophylaxis of cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease following organ transplantation. Early initiation of treatment is crucial for optimal efficacy, especially in conditions like shingles, to reduce the severity and duration of symptoms and prevent post-herpetic neuralgia, a common complication.
