About

Betahistine is a histamine analogue specifically developed for the long-term treatment of Meniere's disease and its debilitating constellation of symptoms, including recurrent episodes of vertigo, tinnitus, progressive hearing loss, and aural fullness. Its complex mechanism of action is believed to involve both H1-receptor agonism and potent H3-receptor antagonism. By acting as a weak H1-receptor agonist, betahistine causes vasodilation, particularly in the microvasculature of the inner ear, thereby improving local blood flow and reducing endolymphatic pressure. Concurrently, its potent H3-receptor antagonist activity leads to an increase in the release of histamine from presynaptic neurons, further enhancing its effects on inner ear circulation and potentially modulating neuronal activity in the vestibular nuclei. This dual action helps to stabilize the inner ear environment, reduce the frequency and severity of vertigo attacks, and alleviate other associated symptoms. Betahistine is considered a cornerstone therapy for Meniere's disease, aiming to provide symptomatic relief and improve the patient's quality of life over time.
