About
ARVAST 20MG TAB contains Atorvastatin, a widely prescribed medication belonging to the class of drugs known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, or statins. Atorvastatin works by blocking the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which plays a crucial role in the liver's production of cholesterol. By inhibiting this enzyme, Atorvastatin effectively reduces the synthesis of cholesterol, leading to a significant decrease in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), often referred to as 'bad cholesterol'.
In addition to lowering LDL-C, Atorvastatin also helps to reduce elevated triglyceride levels and can modestly increase high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), or 'good cholesterol'. These actions collectively contribute to improving the overall lipid profile. The therapeutic benefits extend beyond lipid modification, as Atorvastatin has demonstrated pleiotropic effects, including anti-inflammatory and plaque-stabilizing properties, which are vital in reducing the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attacks, strokes, and the need for revascularization procedures in patients with or at high risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
