About

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a mucolytic agent widely used to reduce the viscosity of respiratory secretions, facilitating their clearance from the airways. It acts by breaking disulfide bonds in mucoproteins, thereby depolymerizing mucin complexes and making sputum less tenacious. This action is particularly beneficial in conditions characterized by excessive or thick mucus production, improving respiratory function and reducing the effort required for expectoration.

Beyond its mucolytic properties, NAC is also a precursor to glutathione, a powerful endogenous antioxidant. This dual mechanism of action provides protective effects against oxidative stress and inflammation in the respiratory tract. The 600mg dosage is commonly prescribed for its therapeutic efficacy in various respiratory disorders, contributing to better airway hygiene and symptom management.
