About

Capecitabine is an oral fluoropyrimidine carbamate that is enzymatically converted to fluorouracil (5-FU) in the body, primarily within tumor cells. It is an antimetabolite chemotherapy agent used in the treatment of various cancers, including metastatic colorectal cancer, adjuvant colorectal cancer, and metastatic breast cancer. Capecitabine selectively targets cancer cells by exploiting their higher levels of thymidine phosphorylase, an enzyme that converts an intermediate metabolite into the active cytotoxic agent 5-FU.

This targeted activation leads to the inhibition of DNA and RNA synthesis, ultimately causing cell death in rapidly dividing cancer cells while minimizing systemic exposure to 5-FU. Its oral formulation offers convenience and improved quality of life for patients undergoing long-term cancer treatment, making it a cornerstone in several oncology regimens.
