About

Carvedilol is a unique non-selective beta-adrenergic blocker that also possesses alpha-1 blocking activity. Its beta-blocking properties reduce heart rate, myocardial contractility, and cardiac output, thereby decreasing the heart's workload. Concurrently, its alpha-1 blocking effects lead to vasodilation, which reduces peripheral vascular resistance and lowers blood pressure. This dual mechanism of action results in a comprehensive reduction in blood pressure and improved cardiac function. Carvedilol is particularly beneficial in the management of chronic heart failure, where it helps to reduce mortality and morbidity by improving left ventricular ejection fraction and mitigating the detrimental effects of sympathetic overactivity. It also exhibits antioxidant and anti-proliferative properties, contributing to its cardioprotective effects.

Uses

  • Treatment of essential hypertension.
  • Management of stable chronic heart failure.
  • Treatment of left ventricular dysfunction following myocardial infarction.
  • Management of angina pectoris.

Directions For Use

Take twice daily with food, as directed by your doctor. Do not stop abruptly.

Benefits

  • Lowers high blood pressure.
  • Improves heart function in heart failure.
  • Reduces risk of cardiovascular events.
  • Slows progression of heart disease.
  • Relieves angina symptoms.
  • Provides antioxidant benefits.

Side Effects

  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Bradycardia (slow heart rate)
  • Hypotension (low blood pressure)
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Shortness of breath
  • Weight gain (in heart failure)
  • Peripheral edema
  • Bronchospasm (rare)
  • Masking of hypoglycemia symptoms

Safety Measures

  • Alcohol - Avoid or limit alcohol consumption, as it can exacerbate dizziness and hypotension, which are common side effects of carvedilol.
  • Pregnancy - Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Beta-blockers can cause fetal bradycardia and hypoglycemia.
  • Breastfeeding - Carvedilol is excreted in breast milk. Breastfeeding is generally not recommended while taking this medication.
  • Liver - Contraindicated in patients with clinically manifest hepatic impairment due to extensive hepatic metabolism.
  • Kidney - No dose adjustment is generally required for renal impairment, but caution is advised in severe kidney disease.
  • Lung - Contraindicated in patients with bronchial asthma or severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) due to its non-selective beta-blocking activity.
