About

Atorvastatin is a highly effective HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, commonly known as a statin. It functions by competitively inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which plays a crucial role as the rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis within the liver. This inhibition leads to a substantial reduction in the liver's production of cholesterol. In response to lower intracellular cholesterol levels, the liver upregulates the expression of LDL receptors on its cell surfaces. This increased receptor activity enhances the uptake and catabolism of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) from the bloodstream. The overall pharmacological effect is a significant reduction in total cholesterol, LDL-C, and triglycerides, alongside a modest increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), thereby improving the lipid profile and reducing cardiovascular risk.

Uses

  • Reduction of elevated total cholesterol, LDL-C, and triglycerides.
  • Prevention of cardiovascular events in high-risk patients.
  • Treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia.
  • Reduction of risk for myocardial infarction and stroke.

Take once daily, preferably at the same time each day, with or without food, as directed by your doctor.
