About

Trimetazidine is a cellular anti-ischemic agent that improves myocardial glucose utilization through inhibition of fatty acid oxidation. It helps preserve energy metabolism in cells exposed to hypoxia or ischemia, thereby preventing a decrease in intracellular ATP levels. This action contributes to improved cardiac function and reduced symptoms in patients with stable angina pectoris. It does not directly affect hemodynamic parameters like heart rate or blood pressure, making it a useful add-on therapy for patients who are not adequately controlled by or intolerant to first-line anti-anginal treatments. Its mechanism focuses on metabolic rather than hemodynamic effects, offering a distinct approach to managing myocardial ischemia.

By optimizing cellular energy processes, trimetazidine enhances the efficiency of oxygen utilization within cardiac cells, particularly under conditions of reduced blood flow. This cytoprotective effect helps maintain cellular integrity and function, leading to clinical benefits such as increased exercise capacity and a reduction in the frequency and severity of angina attacks. It is often prescribed as a long-term treatment for stable angina.

Uses

  • Treatment of stable angina pectoris.
  • Adjunctive therapy for ischemic heart disease.
  • Management of vertigo and tinnitus of vascular origin.
  • Treatment of visual field disturbances of ischemic origin.

  • Improves exercise tolerance in angina patients.
  • Enhances myocardial energy metabolism.
  • Does not affect heart rate or blood pressure.
  • Can be used as add-on therapy.
  • May improve symptoms of vertigo and tinnitus.
