About

Trimetazidine is an anti-ischemic metabolic agent that improves myocardial glucose utilization through inhibition of fatty acid oxidation. By preserving energy metabolism in cells exposed to hypoxia or ischemia, it prevents a decrease in intracellular ATP levels, thereby ensuring the proper functioning of ionic pumps and the transmembranous sodium-potassium flow while maintaining cellular homeostasis. This mechanism helps to protect cardiac cells from the damaging effects of ischemia. Trimetazidine is primarily used as an add-on therapy for the symptomatic treatment of stable angina pectoris in patients who are inadequately controlled by or intolerant to first-line anti-anginal therapies.
