About

Epofit is an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) containing recombinant human erythropoietin, a glycoprotein hormone that stimulates red blood cell production. It is primarily used to treat anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in both dialysis and non-dialysis patients, as well as anemia in cancer patients receiving myelosuppressive chemotherapy, and to reduce the need for allogeneic red blood cell transfusions in certain surgical patients. Epofit works by mimicking the action of natural erythropoietin, which is produced by the kidneys and signals the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells.

By increasing the red blood cell count, Epofit helps to alleviate symptoms of anemia such as fatigue, shortness of breath, and decreased exercise tolerance, thereby improving the patient's quality of life. Treatment with Epofit requires careful monitoring of hemoglobin levels to avoid potential risks associated with excessively high levels, such as thrombotic events, and to ensure optimal therapeutic outcomes.

Uses

  • Treatment of anemia associated with chronic kidney disease.
  • Management of anemia in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.
  • Reduction of allogeneic blood transfusions in surgical patients.
  • Treatment of anemia in HIV-infected patients on zidovudine.

Directions For Use

Administer intravenously (IV) or subcutaneously (SC) as directed by your physician. Dosage and frequency depend on the specific condition and patient response.

Safety Measures

  • Alcohol - No specific contraindications with alcohol, but general moderation is advised for overall health, especially in patients with underlying conditions.
  • Pregnancy - Use only if clearly needed and potential benefits outweigh risks, as animal studies show adverse effects. Consult a physician.
  • Breastfeeding - Caution is advised; it is unknown if erythropoietin is excreted in human milk. Consult a physician.
  • Liver - Use with caution in patients with liver impairment, though dose adjustments are not typically required based on liver function alone.
  • Kidney - Primarily used for anemia in CKD; careful monitoring of hemoglobin and blood pressure is crucial.
  • Lung - No specific contraindications or significant interactions with lung conditions are generally noted, but monitor for thrombotic events.
