About

Febuxostat is a potent, non-purine selective inhibitor of xanthine oxidase (XO), an enzyme crucial for the production of uric acid. By specifically blocking this enzyme, febuxostat effectively lowers serum uric acid levels, making it a cornerstone in the long-term management of chronic hyperuricemia in patients diagnosed with gout. This reduction in uric acid concentration is vital for preventing the formation of new uric acid crystals and facilitating the dissolution of existing crystals, which are responsible for painful gout flares and progressive joint damage. Febuxostat offers a valuable therapeutic option, particularly for patients who are intolerant to allopurinol or for whom allopurinol is not sufficiently effective. Its consistent use helps to stabilize uric acid levels, thereby reducing the frequency and severity of gout attacks and preserving joint integrity over time.

  • Chronic management of hyperuricemia in patients with gout.
  • Prevention of gout flares.
