About

FORMIN PG2 TAB is an oral antidiabetic medication that combines two distinct classes of glucose-lowering agents: Metformin and Pioglitazone. Metformin, a biguanide, primarily functions by reducing the amount of glucose produced by the liver and by enhancing the sensitivity of peripheral tissues, such as muscle cells, to insulin. Pioglitazone, a thiazolidinedione (TZD), works by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-gamma) in adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, and the liver, thereby improving insulin sensitivity and reducing insulin resistance. This synergistic combination therapy is prescribed for adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus to achieve superior glycemic control when monotherapy or other combinations are insufficient, effectively targeting both glucose overproduction and insulin resistance.

Uses

  • Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
  • Improvement of glycemic control
  • Reduction of insulin resistance
  • Lowering fasting and postprandial glucose

Directions For Use

Take orally with meals, usually once or twice daily, as prescribed by your physician. Swallow the tablet whole with water.

Benefits

  • Effective blood sugar control
  • Addresses insulin resistance
  • Reduces hepatic glucose output
  • Convenient combination therapy
  • May help reduce cardiovascular risk factors (Pioglitazone)
  • Helps lower HbA1c levels

Side Effects

  • Hypoglycemia (less common than sulfonylureas)
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Weight gain
  • Fluid retention/edema
  • Headache
  • Upper respiratory tract infection
  • Bladder cancer risk (Pioglitazone, rare)
  • Bone fractures (Pioglitazone)
  • Lactic acidosis (Metformin, rare but serious)
  • Macular edema (Pioglitazone)

Safety Measures

  • Alcohol - Avoid excessive alcohol due to increased risk of lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia.
  • Pregnancy - Generally not recommended; insulin is preferred for glycemic control during pregnancy. Consult a doctor.
  • Breastfeeding - Not recommended as Metformin passes into breast milk. Consult a doctor for alternatives.
  • Liver - Contraindicated in active liver disease; regular monitoring of liver enzymes is essential.
  • Kidney - Contraindicated in severe renal impairment (Metformin component). Dose adjustment needed for moderate impairment.
  • Lung - Use with caution in conditions predisposing to heart failure, as Pioglitazone can exacerbate fluid retention.
