About

Ciprofloxacin is a potent, broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic renowned for its efficacy against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes required for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. By disrupting these vital processes, ciprofloxacin leads to bacterial cell death, exhibiting a strong bactericidal effect.

This antibiotic is commonly prescribed for various systemic and localized infections, including complicated urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections such such as pneumonia and bronchitis, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, and certain gastrointestinal infections like infectious diarrhea. Its excellent tissue penetration and broad coverage make it a valuable agent in managing severe or resistant bacterial infections, particularly in hospital and community settings.

  • Breastfeeding - Ciprofloxacin is excreted into breast milk and is generally not recommended during breastfeeding due to potential adverse effects on the infant's joints and gut flora.
  • Liver - Use with caution in patients with severe liver impairment, as ciprofloxacin is metabolized by the liver. Dose adjustments may be necessary.
  • Kidney - Dose adjustment is necessary in patients with moderate to severe kidney impairment, as ciprofloxacin is primarily eliminated by the kidneys.
