About

Dapagliflozin is an oral antidiabetic medication classified as a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. It works by blocking the reabsorption of glucose in the kidneys, leading to increased glucose excretion in the urine. This mechanism effectively lowers blood glucose levels independently of insulin secretion or sensitivity. Beyond its primary role in glycemic control for type 2 diabetes, dapagliflozin has demonstrated significant cardiovascular and renal benefits. It reduces the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure in patients with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease or multiple risk factors. Furthermore, it slows the progression of chronic kidney disease in patients with or without type 2 diabetes. Its action also contributes to modest weight loss and blood pressure reduction.

Uses

  • Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • Reduction of cardiovascular risk in type 2 diabetes.
