About

Dapagliflozin is an oral antidiabetic agent belonging to the class of sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. It works by selectively inhibiting SGLT2 in the renal tubules, which is responsible for the reabsorption of glucose from the filtered blood back into the bloodstream. By blocking this transporter, dapagliflozin significantly reduces glucose reabsorption and increases the excretion of glucose in the urine, leading to a reduction in blood glucose levels. This mechanism is independent of insulin secretion or action, making it effective even in patients with impaired insulin production.

Beyond its primary role in glycemic control, dapagliflozin has demonstrated substantial benefits in reducing the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease or multiple cardiovascular risk factors. Furthermore, it provides significant renal protection, reducing the risk of sustained eGFR decline, end-stage kidney disease, and cardiovascular death in adults with chronic kidney disease. Its action also contributes to modest weight loss and blood pressure reduction, offering a comprehensive approach to managing diabetes and its associated comorbidities.
