About

This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, commonly referred to as statins. It works by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which is crucial for cholesterol synthesis in the liver. By reducing the production of cholesterol, it significantly lowers levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), often called "bad" cholesterol, and total cholesterol. It also helps to lower triglycerides and can modestly increase high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), or "good" cholesterol.

The primary goal of this therapy is to improve the lipid profile, thereby reducing the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks and strokes. It is an essential component of long-term management for individuals with hypercholesterolemia or those at high risk for cardiovascular events.

Uses

  • Treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia
  • Management of mixed dyslipidemia
  • Primary prevention of cardiovascular disease
  • Secondary prevention of cardiovascular events
