About

Ceftriaxone is a highly effective, broad-spectrum, third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic administered parenterally. It exerts its bactericidal action by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, primarily by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located on the bacterial cell membrane. This interference leads to the lysis and death of susceptible bacteria. A key characteristic of ceftriaxone is its exceptionally long half-life, which permits convenient once-daily dosing, enhancing patient compliance and reducing administration burden. It achieves high and sustained concentrations in various body fluids and tissues, including the cerebrospinal fluid, making it a preferred choice for serious infections such as bacterial meningitis. Its robust activity against a wide spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including many beta-lactamase producing strains, positions it as a vital agent in both community-acquired and hospital-acquired severe infections.
