About

Ricovir 300mg contains Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (TDF), a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI). TDF is a prodrug that is converted intracellularly to tenofovir diphosphate, which then inhibits the activity of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase and HBV polymerase. This inhibition prevents the replication of the viral genetic material, thereby reducing viral load and progression of the disease.

It is a cornerstone medication in the management of HIV infection as part of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and is also widely used for the treatment of chronic Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Its efficacy in suppressing viral replication helps to improve immune function in HIV patients and reduce liver inflammation and fibrosis in HBV patients. Regular monitoring of renal function and bone mineral density is important during long-term treatment.

Uses

  • Treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and pediatric patients.
  • Management of chronic Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in adults.
  • Used as part of combination antiretroviral therapy for HIV.
  • Prevention of HIV infection (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis - PrEP) in high-risk individuals.

Directions For Use

Take orally once daily with food, as directed by your healthcare provider. Do not crush or chew the tablet.

Benefits

  • Highly effective in suppressing HIV-1 and HBV replication.
  • Improves immune function and reduces disease progression in HIV.
  • Reduces liver inflammation and fibrosis in chronic HBV.
  • Convenient once-daily dosing.
  • Well-established safety and efficacy profile.
  • Can be used for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

Side Effects

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Rash
  • Asthenia (weakness)
  • Flatulence
  • Increased serum creatinine
  • Decreased bone mineral density
  • Lactic acidosis (rare but serious)

Safety Measures

  • Alcohol - Excessive alcohol consumption can worsen liver function, which is particularly relevant for patients with HBV. It may also exacerbate some side effects.
  • Pregnancy - TDF is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy for HIV treatment and prevention. Discuss risks and benefits with a healthcare provider.
  • Breastfeeding - Breastfeeding is not recommended for mothers with HIV to prevent postnatal transmission. For HBV, discuss with a doctor; TDF is excreted in milk but at low levels.
  • Liver - Use with caution in patients with pre-existing liver disease. Monitor liver function regularly, especially in HBV patients, as exacerbations can occur upon discontinuation.
  • Kidney - Use with caution in patients with renal impairment. Renal function should be monitored closely before and during treatment, and dose adjustments may be necessary.
  • Lung - No specific lung-related contraindications, but monitor for any unusual respiratory symptoms.
