About

Sevlaren-800 contains sevelamer, a non-calcium, non-aluminum phosphate binder used to control serum phosphorus levels in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are on dialysis. In CKD, impaired kidney function leads to an accumulation of phosphate in the blood, a condition known as hyperphosphatemia. Elevated phosphate levels can contribute to various complications, including secondary hyperparathyroidism, renal osteodystrophy, and increased cardiovascular risk. Sevelamer works by binding to dietary phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, forming an insoluble complex that is then excreted in the feces, thereby preventing its absorption into the bloodstream.

By effectively reducing serum phosphate, Sevlaren-800 helps to mitigate the progression of bone disease and calcification of soft tissues and blood vessels, which are common and serious complications in dialysis patients. Unlike calcium-based binders, sevelamer does not contribute to calcium load, making it a preferred option for patients at risk of hypercalcemia. Adherence to the prescribed dosage with meals is crucial for its efficacy in managing this critical aspect of CKD management.

Uses

  • Control of serum phosphorus in adult patients with CKD on dialysis.
  • Prevention of hyperphosphatemia-related complications.
  • Management of secondary hyperparathyroidism in CKD.
  • Reduction of cardiovascular risk associated with high phosphate.
