About

Sevalac (Sevelamer) is a non-calcium, non-aluminum phosphate binder used to control serum phosphorus levels in adult patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on dialysis. It works by binding to dietary phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, forming an insoluble complex that is then excreted in the feces. This action prevents the absorption of phosphate into the bloodstream, thereby reducing hyperphosphatemia, a common and serious complication of CKD that contributes to secondary hyperparathyroidism, renal osteodystrophy, and cardiovascular disease. Sevalac does not contain calcium or aluminum, which helps to avoid the risks associated with calcium and aluminum accumulation in CKD patients.
