About
Acyclovir is a highly effective antiviral agent specifically designed for the treatment and management of infections caused by various herpes viruses, including herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2, and varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Its mechanism of action relies on its selective phosphorylation by viral thymidine kinase, converting it into its active triphosphate form. This active metabolite then competitively inhibits viral DNA polymerase and is incorporated into the viral DNA chain, leading to premature chain termination and inhibition of viral DNA replication. Acyclovir does not eradicate the virus from the body but significantly reduces the severity, duration, and frequency of outbreaks associated with conditions like genital herpes, cold sores, shingles, and chickenpox, thereby improving patient comfort and preventing complications.
