About

Silodosin is a highly selective alpha-1A adrenergic receptor antagonist primarily indicated for the treatment of signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Its mechanism of action involves selectively blocking alpha-1A receptors, which are predominantly found in the smooth muscle of the prostate, bladder neck, and prostatic urethra. By antagonizing these receptors, silodosin induces relaxation of the smooth muscle in these areas, thereby reducing the dynamic component of prostatic obstruction. This leads to a significant improvement in urinary flow and a reduction in lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) such as urinary hesitancy, weak stream, nocturia, and incomplete bladder emptying. The high selectivity for alpha-1A receptors aims to minimize cardiovascular side effects often associated with less selective alpha-blockers. Silodosin offers rapid onset of action, providing symptomatic relief shortly after initiation of therapy, and is typically administered once daily.
