About

Telma 20, containing Telmisartan, is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) primarily used in the management of essential hypertension. It works by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor in various tissues, including vascular smooth muscle. This action prevents the vasoconstrictive and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II, leading to a reduction in systemic vascular resistance and blood pressure. Telmisartan is known for its long duration of action, allowing for once-daily dosing, which contributes to improved patient adherence. Beyond its antihypertensive effects, Telmisartan has demonstrated benefits in reducing the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients at high risk, such as those with a history of coronary artery disease, stroke, peripheral arterial disease, or diabetes with end-organ damage. Its renoprotective properties are also noted, particularly in patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes.

  • Pregnancy - Telma 20 is contraindicated during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, due to the risk of fetal harm and death.
  • Breastfeeding - Telma 20 is not recommended during breastfeeding as it may pass into breast milk and potentially harm the infant. Consult your doctor.
  • Liver - Use with caution in patients with severe hepatic impairment. Dose adjustment may be necessary as Telmisartan is primarily eliminated via bile.
  • Kidney - Use with caution in patients with renal impairment. Regular monitoring of kidney function and serum potassium levels is recommended.
  • Lung - Telma 20 is generally safe for use in patients with lung conditions, as it does not typically cause respiratory side effects like cough associated with ACE inhibitors.
