About

Tamsulosin is a selective alpha-1A adrenergic receptor antagonist primarily prescribed for the symptomatic treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Its therapeutic action involves selectively blocking alpha-1A receptors predominantly located in the prostate, prostatic capsule, bladder neck, and prostatic urethra. This blockade leads to the relaxation of smooth muscle in these areas, effectively reducing the dynamic component of prostatic obstruction without significantly affecting blood pressure in normotensive individuals. Consequently, tamsulosin improves urine flow and alleviates both irritative (e.g., urgency, frequency) and obstructive (e.g., hesitancy, weak stream) voiding symptoms associated with BPH. Importantly, tamsulosin does not reduce prostate size but significantly enhances urinary function and patient comfort, offering a non-invasive approach to managing BPH symptoms.

Uses

  • Treatment of signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
  • Improvement of urine flow in men with BPH.
  • Relief of obstructive voiding symptoms (e.g., hesitancy, weak stream).
  • Relief of irritative voiding symptoms (e.g., urgency, frequency).
