About
Alsita MP500 is a fixed-dose combination medication specifically formulated for the comprehensive management of type 2 diabetes mellitus, containing Alogliptin (a dipeptidyl peptidase-4, or DPP-4, inhibitor) and Metformin (a biguanide). Alogliptin works by increasing the levels of naturally occurring incretin hormones, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). These hormones stimulate insulin release from the pancreas and suppress glucagon secretion in a glucose-dependent manner, effectively lowering post-meal blood glucose. Metformin, a cornerstone in diabetes therapy, primarily reduces glucose production by the liver and improves insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues, enhancing glucose uptake and utilization. This dual mechanism of action provides effective and complementary glycemic control, helping to significantly reduce HbA1c levels and improve overall metabolic health in adults with type 2 diabetes.
Uses
- Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults.
- When diet and exercise alone are insufficient.
- When Metformin monotherapy does not provide adequate glycemic control.
- As an adjunct to diet and exercise.
Directions For Use
Take orally twice daily with meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
Benefits
- Effectively lowers blood glucose.
- Reduces HbA1c levels.
- Improves insulin sensitivity.
- Reduces hepatic glucose production.
- Generally weight-neutral.
- Low risk of hypoglycemia when used alone.
Side Effects
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- Headache
- Upper respiratory tract infection
- Nasopharyngitis
- Lactic acidosis (rare, Metformin-related)
- Pancreatitis (rare, Alogliptin-related)
- Joint pain
- Rash
- Hypoglycemia (when used with sulfonylureas or insulin)
- Vitamin B12 deficiency (Metformin-related)
Safety Measures
- Alcohol - Avoid excessive alcohol due to increased risk of lactic acidosis (Metformin) and hypoglycemia.
- Pregnancy - Not recommended during pregnancy; use only if clearly needed and benefits outweigh risks.
- Breastfeeding - Not recommended due to unknown excretion into breast milk and potential for adverse effects in the infant.
- Liver - Use with caution in hepatic impairment; Metformin is contraindicated in severe liver disease.
- Kidney - Contraindicated in severe renal impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73 m²); dose adjustment needed for moderate impairment.
- Lung - No specific contraindications or precautions related to lung conditions, but severe respiratory failure can increase lactic acidosis risk.
