About

Amlong-A is a fixed-dose combination therapy indicated for the treatment of essential hypertension, particularly in patients who may also benefit from beta-blockade. It contains Amlodipine, a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker, and Atenolol, a cardioselective beta-1 adrenergic receptor blocker. Amlodipine primarily acts by relaxing the smooth muscle cells in the arterial walls, leading to peripheral vasodilation and a subsequent reduction in systemic vascular resistance and blood pressure. Atenolol reduces heart rate, myocardial contractility, and cardiac output by blocking beta-1 receptors in the heart, thereby lowering blood pressure and decreasing myocardial oxygen demand.

This combination offers a comprehensive approach to blood pressure control, addressing both vascular resistance and cardiac output. It is especially beneficial for hypertensive patients with co-existing conditions such as angina pectoris, where both blood pressure reduction and heart rate control are desirable.

Uses

  • Treatment of essential hypertension.
  • Management of high blood pressure with co-existing angina.
  • To reduce cardiovascular risk in hypertensive patients.
  • When monotherapy with either agent is insufficient.

Directions For Use

Take once daily, preferably at the same time each day. It can be taken with or without food.

Benefits

  • Effective in lowering blood pressure.
  • Manages both hypertension and angina.
  • Reduces heart rate and workload on the heart.
  • Provides sustained blood pressure control.
  • Convenient once-daily dosing.
  • Helps prevent cardiovascular complications.

Side Effects

  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Bradycardia (slow heart rate)
  • Cold extremities
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Edema (swelling)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Insomnia
  • Depression

Safety Measures

  • Alcohol - Avoid or limit alcohol as it can increase the hypotensive effects and cause excessive dizziness.
  • Pregnancy - Not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, due to potential fetal growth restriction and bradycardia.
  • Breastfeeding - Both components are excreted in breast milk; use with caution, and monitor the infant for adverse effects.
  • Liver - Use with caution in patients with liver impairment, as amlodipine metabolism may be affected.
  • Kidney - Atenolol is primarily renally excreted; dose adjustment is necessary in patients with moderate to severe renal impairment.
  • Lung - Use with caution in patients with asthma or COPD, as atenolol, even if cardioselective, can cause bronchospasm at higher doses.
