About
Anastrozole is a potent and selective non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor. Aromatase is an enzyme found in many tissues, including breast tissue, that converts androgens into estrogens. In postmenopausal women, the primary source of estrogen is this peripheral conversion. Anastrozole works by inhibiting aromatase, thereby significantly reducing circulating estrogen levels. This reduction in estrogen is crucial in the treatment of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, as estrogen can stimulate the growth of these cancer cells.
It is used as adjuvant therapy for early breast cancer and for the first-line treatment of advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women, as well as for advanced breast cancer that has progressed following tamoxifen therapy. Its targeted action helps to slow or stop the progression of estrogen-dependent tumors, improving patient outcomes and disease-free survival.
