About

Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that selectively blocks the action of leukotrienes, which are inflammatory mediators released from various cells, including mast cells and eosinophils. These leukotrienes contribute to bronchoconstriction, mucus secretion, vascular permeability, and eosinophil recruitment, all of which are key components of asthma and allergic rhinitis. By inhibiting the binding of leukotrienes to their receptors, montelukast helps to reduce inflammation and improve airflow in the airways.

It is effective in the long-term management of asthma, including exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, and for the relief of symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. It is not intended for the relief of acute asthma attacks and should be used as a maintenance therapy to prevent symptoms and improve lung function over time.
